A Raisin In the Sun

Sometimes swallowing your pride is neccessary for survival.

In the play the Younger's are a very proud family. Beneatha is going to college to be a doctor and mama is always saying how she's proud of her ancestors. She talks about how far they've came from being slaves and sharecroppers. Walter is too proud to admit that he's wrong sometimes. When Lindner offers the family money to not move into their home they do not accept it because they would be ruining their name. Walter invites Lindner back after he loses the money and is going to accept his offer. As he talks to Lindner he realizes what he's done. If he accepts this money it would be a disgrace because they're better than that! He tells Lindner about his family's history and how proud they are and ends up that day finding himself and becoming a man.

Once children are grown, parents are no longer responsible for them.

In the play, the whole family lives together. Lena which is Walter and Beneathas' mother continues to be the head of the house. It's her home that her husband and her worked hard for. In some families children are on their own but in this case they all stayed together. Parents will always be there for you but not necessarily be responsible for every little thing that you do. Lena tries her best to help Walter, she trusts him with the money and lets him be head of the household. He ends up showing he wasn't ready but she was still there for him. She helped him through all the trying times that he had, when he couldn't believe in himself.

You should hold onto your dreams; if you work hard enough for them, they will come true.

In the play A Raisin In the Sun, all the characters dream big. They all want a new place to live. Walter wants very badly to be a business man. If you don't dream big or try big things you won't get anywhere is the way he thinks. He gives all his money away trying to invest. The family is trying hard to move out and start a good life. Beneatha is going to college to become a doctor, which is a big dream considering the time period in the play. Things weren't really working to her advantage. She would most likely be discriminated by her race and her sex.
